History of The Wayne County Health Center

A special county -wide election was held Tuesday, January 20, 1948 to decide on a tax of one mil on the dollar, which would generate about $5,500 to be used for the establishment, building and operation of a Public Health Center for Wayne County citizens.  The voters approved this proposition by a two-thirds majority.  The Wayne County Health Center would be situated in the county seat of Greenville.

The first Health Center was housed in the Greenville Masonic Hall with a medical director, a public health nurse (Bernice Twidwell), a sanitary inspector and an office secretary.  Wayne County was, at this time, home to about 11,000 people.  With no previous health work done, the personnel certainly had plenty to do.

The second location of the Health Center was in a small area of the Drug Store building in Greenville, In 1964, a new Health Center was built at its present location and an additional building was built in 1981.

Originally initiated to prevent illness and offer health education programs, the Wayne County Health Center has grown to become a much more comprehensive health service provider.

Today, the Heath Center has a staff of approximately 50 employees, and still maintains the one mil tax levy with support from numerous state and federal programs.  The Health Center continues to offer education programs such as Emergency Preparedness, Immunizations, Blood Pressure Screening, Cholesterol Screening, STD and HIV Testing, TB Screening, Vital Records, Environmental Public Health, Health Education, Communicable Disease, In-Home Services, Show Me Health Women/Wise Women, Breastfeeding Education and Support, WIC, Temporary Prenatal Medicaid Cards and a variety of testing programs.
